Ethics and Corporate Responsibility in the Workplace and the World Essay Example for Free

Morals and Corporate Responsibility in the Workplace and the World Essay Conceptual This paper will look at the morals of a pharmaceutical organization by the name of PharmaCARE. Partners will be talked about, and the treatment of average specialists versus administrators will be investigated. Additionally the proposed terminating of three of PharmaCare’s laborers will be discussed. Furthermore commitments, security, and whistleblowing openings will be analyzed in the interest of Allen an administrator for the organization. PharmaCARE’s natural activities will be evaluated and contrasted with their endeavors to stop ecological laws and guidelines. The Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act ( CERCLA) will be assessed, and all arrangements which apply to the PharmaCARE situation will be examined. PharmaCARE is one of the world’s best pharmaceutical organizations. It has gained notoriety for creating excellent items that spared a large number of lives, and upgrade the nature of a great many others. The organization supports a program that offers free and limited drug to low pay clients. PharmaCARE has numerous partners. Partners being any one or gathering possessing a critical level of an organization shares, or an individual or gathering not claiming shares in a venture however influenced by or having enthusiasm for its operation.(W.Dictionary) Having set up the meaning of a partner, one can agree that PharmaCARE has bounty. While distinguishing the company’s partners the principal that strike a chord are the speculators, investors and representatives, without these individuals the organization would stop to exist. The optional partners are the clients, providers, networks, facilities, emergency clinics, and doctors’ workplaces, these gatherings have an i ntrigue or will be influenced by the tasks of PharmaCARE. Built up in New Jersey, PharmaCARE claims a generous assembling office in the African country of Colberia. The locals of the land are very poor and keep up the least way of life. PharmaCARE utilizes the locals, paying them a measly one dollar daily compensation to accumulate plants and convey as much as fifty pounds five miles. The organization administrators that run the office then again live in an extravagance compound gave by the organization. PharmaCARE’s practice of paying individuals to work for a dollar daily is absolutely utilitarian. They are getting modest work and devastating the place where there is the locals without attempting to give a structure to enable the individuals to out of destitution, or give hardware or offices to assist them with renewing their territory. PharmaCARE is ethically degenerate, they have no feeling of network with regards to their primary concern. The official of PharmaCARE are paid sizable pay rates and are dealt with well. They are giv en offices that contain all the civilities. The lower positioning representatives are treated as expendables. They are relied upon to work in dangerous conditions without protest, or hazard the opportunity of being terminated. They are at times paid a pay so miniscule that it tends to be deciphered as cutting edge bondage. On a superficial level PharmaCARE seems to be a morally solid organization however when firmly assessed it is utilitarianism even from a pessimistic standpoint. Allen Jones a director for the organization was designated to lead another division made by PharmaCARE called CompCARE. The auxiliary was a path for PharmaCARE to keep away from FDA examination concerning the reformulation and selling of their top selling diabetes tranquilize. The organization immediately settled CompCARE and did a minimal effort redesign to an office found near headquarter. The new detailing of the medication was fruitful for rewarding Alzheimer and the accomplishment of CompCARE developed. As creation and working hours expanded representatives started to become sick. A representative brought to Allen’s consideration that there was form broadcasting in real time vents, subsequent to reaching his manager Allen was advised to overlook the reality. An EE by the name of Donna who recently had impeccable participation turned out to be sick to such an extent that she could no longer answer to work as a result of the form. So she in the end petitioned for laborers p ay. Tom one of Allen’s best director take steps to record a grumbling with OSHA about the air quality at the office since it was so terrible. In conclusion an EE named Ayesha recorded an EEOC (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission) complaintâ inferring that she had been investigated for an advancement since she was Muslim. Allen talked about the EE issues with his chief and was advised to fire them all. Terminating the EEs would not be the best choice for Allen, he needs to think about the legitimate consequences of his activities. Lawfully, Allen can't terminate Donna for petitioning for laborers remuneration, an EE is shielded by law from counter for recording a case. Donna had great work assessments preceding her sickness, Allen would need to give adequate proof that terminating her was not because of the recording of a laborers comp guarantee. Terminating Donna would unquestionably bring a work segregation claim against PharmaCARE, it would be savvy for Allen to persuade his supervisor to deal with the form issue in the office it would set aside the organization cash over the long haul. Ending Tom would likewise bring prosecutions against PharmaCARE, Tom could charge that he was improperly released, on the grounds that he whined about his dangerous working conditions and take steps to advise OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Commission). Under the Wrongful Discharge from Employment Act one can't be fired for announcing an infringement of open arrangement or not for good purpose once a trial period is fin ished. Tom was Allen’s best director, ending him would be unlawful. Allen needs to convince his supervisor to cure the shape issue at the office, he needs to disclose to him that it is to the greatest advantage of the organization. Finally Allen could legitimately terminate Ayesha, not as a result of her recording an objection with EEOC (Equal Employment Opportunities Commission) yet for not having the option to validate the case. Under the Employment-at-Will Act he can fire her except if some sort of authoritative terms are expressed or inferred in the employer’s handbook. Allen’s administrative status places him in a remarkable position, he has direct contact with the officials and day by day collaborations with the lower level EE. Allen is confronted with lawful and moral issues, Allen has been advised to permit laborers to stay in a risky workplace. The air nature of the working environment is risky to the soundness of any one working in the earth. As a chief he has a moral and legitimate obligation to report the states of his place of work to first his bosses, at that point to OSHA if no measures are taken to address the issue. Allen’s manager has clarified that nothing will be done about the air contamination, so detailing this issue to OSHA wouldâ benefit Allen legitimately. As an administrator Allen was made mindful of the issue by a representative, if the worker chooses to contact OSHA and educate them that they detailed this issue to him he might be terminated later for not finding a way to cure the issue. When you present an ob jection to OSHA your organization can't fight back against you, this will shield Allen from getting terminated and having legitimate activity taken against him. Allen answering to OSHA is his best choice, his activity will be ensured and he would have made the best choice for the workers. PharmaCARE had as of late declared its â€Å"We Care about Your World† activity. They began reusing, and made bundling changes, these means caused them to appear network cordial. Indeed, even as they took on these green activities, they campaigned to square ecological endeavors that would profit everyone's benefit of the individuals. Additionally they entered poor towns and misused the individuals and the land to their advantage with no ethical measure. It appears that PharmaCARE is advancing a picture of natural stewardship when they are very degenerate. They are misdirecting the network with their in the background rehearses. In the event that PharmaCARE will depict themselves as a naturally cordial organization than they ought to accept the accountability of starting a green program in all parts of their creations sensibly speaking. Networks will bolster an organization that they accept to think about the enthusiasm of everyone's benefit and not simply benefit. PharmaCARE i s risking their picture with these exploitative practices and whenever made open the organization might endure a monetary misfortune. Exhaustive Environment Response Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) otherwise called Superfund, was sanctioned by Congress in 1980. This law made an expense on the concoction and oil businesses and gave expansive Federal position to react legitimately to discharges or compromised arrivals of risky substances that may imperil general wellbeing or the earth. The law approved the EPA to distinguish organizations or people liable for risky waste sullying and expect them to tidy it up. On the off chance that no gathering could be discovered answerable for the defilement, at that point cash from the superfund would be utilized for the cleanup. On October 17, 1986 CERCLA was corrected to incorporate progressively nitty gritty arrangements to better the procedure ofâ enforcing keeping up and cleaning tainting locales. They incorporate expanding State association in each period of the Superfund program, requiring Superfund activities to consider the measures and necessities found in other State and Federal natural laws and guidelines, and focusing on the significance of lasting cures and creative treatment innovations in tidying up unsafe waste destinations. There are eleven arrangements taking all things together, they were added to give the states greater expert in the issues of natural insurance, and carry attention to the real risks to human wellbeing from perilous waste. Arrangements identifying with PharmaCARE are the option to have protected and harmful free working conditions and the intensity of the state to implement tidy up, likewise the

McDonald’s situated in Pakistan are as of now utilizing around 1,000 Pakistanis and each store is overseen by Pakistani directors. They have additionally contributed in different manners than food administration. McDonalds has venture of over Rs 300 crore in the nation and installment of expenses and obligations adding up to more than Rs 100 crore. Since McDonald’s is doing so well in Pakistan they will proceed to develop and include more stores in more urban areas later on. Be that as it may, in Pakistan McDonald’s is confronting an extreme rivalry by KFC. KFC and McDonald’s serve to overwhelm the inexpensive food business in Pakistan. Both cheap food chains serve every one of their clients viably, given the various classifications and components that decide the achievement of eateries and inexpensive food chains in Pakistan. Nonetheless, in light of the discoveries of the past research, it tends to be seen that KFC is maintaining a progressively effective business in Pakistan, contrasted with the business run by McDonald’s. This was given confirmation in the article, in view of the numerous and changed reactions of clients to overviews, which include their assessment of both drive-through joints, in light of various elements, to be specific, food, administration, condition, value, comfort, brand, and advancement. Regarding food, albeit both drive-through joints nearly have similar assortments, certain distinctions can in any case be perceived. Both KFC and McDonald’s offer chicken and burger dinners including tidbits, pastries, and beverages. In any case, just KFC offers a wide scope of solid side dishes, for example, squashed potato, carrot biscuit, and lotus new vegetable side dishes. In this sense, KFC means to maintain good dieting and nourishment of their clients. Furthermore, it has been stressed for the situation study that KFC seemed to have the high ground over McDonald’s as far as presenting new items in the market. In light of the overview, more clients are â€Å"Very Satisfied† with the administrations and condition of KFC over McDonald’s. Likewise, it can likewise be seen that KFC has more bit of leeway than McDonald’s, as the workers in KFC have less time to interface with clients than its partner, as the volume of its business is bigger. The costs of food offered by the two cafés similarly serve one another. The issue which we confronted while leading our exploration are right off the bat the individuals were not co usable so as to fill our survey and we need to persuade them. Another issue was that individuals were dithering to fill our poll. 1. 8 DATA COLLECTION Q1) What is your age gathering? As we have taken our example between 18-32. So the individuals who have filled the structure

Intestine Discord Essay Example

Digestive tract Discord Paper With respect to the last piece of the statement, (The finish of Obedienceby Intestine Discord), we see that incomprehensibly, however the individuals all concur on the way that they have to follow the judgment of one single position in order to be shielded from the potential danger they speak to every others, this standard must be authorized upon them by dread. Hobbess legitimization for this is on the off chance that they have no other explanation to adhere to decides however the possibility that they ought to do as such, at that point they will unavoidably, subject to their characteristic self-centeredness, be slanted to seek after their own advantages, in any event, when that implies making hurt others (which is generally the situation, for there is a disparity among individual and regular intrigue). The difficult that follows is that, if individuals are so reluctant to adhere to the agreement, in any event, realizing it is to their greatest advantage to do as such, at that point how could they come, while still in the condition of nature, to set up that equivalent contract? In Leviathan, a typical authority is made when everybody in a condition of natures consents to present their Wills, everybody to his Will, and their Judgements, to his Judgment (Leviathan ch.17) Hobbes discusses the agreement as far as a guarantee made by the individuals, to every others and not to the sovereign, where they consent to take one people or assemblys decisions as their own in any case, he likewise guarantees that in a condition of nature, the obligations of words are too frail to even consider bridling mens aspiration, voracity, outrage, and different Passions, without the dread of some coercive force (Leviathan ch.14). In this manner, the way that I keep my assertion, and accept the sovereigns judgment as my own, will most likely not be a detriment in managing others, regardless of whether they dont: it wont be a preferred position either, for just if everybody observes a similar guideline will the region be established. We could believe that the life in the condition of nature is hopeless to the point that it constrains the large number to keep their assertion just so as to forsake such a way of life, and all things considered, just if either the sovereign can't fulfill the people groups fundamental needs, and sentences them to starvation or outrageous neediness, or he can't locate the suitable laws to control his people groups conclusions will his system reach a conclusion. Of the previous case I have just spoken, undoubtedly, Hobbes was, inquisitively enough, especially worried about humanists, a sort to which he had a place himself in his childhood, for, he thought, they misread the writings of the Ancients; they lauded republican freedoms out of their unique situation, and needed it for themselves, while for Hobbes it was accurately those desires for singular freedoms that could prompt the passing of the federation, for the opportunity of men just methods strife. All in all, I will say that despite the fact that Hobbess record of how to oversee a state appears to definitely prompt a tyrant rule, such ward could similarly too end up being a libertarian state, since much is left and that is, I think, what appears to be generally striking to us today to the character of the sovereign. A equal could be drawn with Marxs thought, on the off chance that we consider that such sovereign looked to keep his position by expanding his subjects riches which Hobbes does without a doubt recommend and, presenting this realist perspective, we could envision a hobbesian state to be near Marxs perfect socialist society: one where the people prosperity would be guaranteed, leaving them allowed to seek after their own advantages in various regions. Such correlation, notwithstanding, disregards the way that while for Hobbes there is nothing of the sort as society, and just the delegate can without a doubt demonstration, for Marx the inverse is valid, i.e., the individuals are the individuals who have the genuine force; besides, though Hobbes believes that authority of one individual or get together is the best way to maintain a strategic distance from common war, Marx rather observes the standard of one gathering of people as the wellspring of inward conflict. Whereas one tries to nullify opportunity, and finds in it the wellspring of all Intestine Discord, different looks to free the man so as to take out clash. Both, in any case, propose rather outrageous sorts of government; both delivered, in various ways, visionary records of society, and, in addition, it ought not be overlooked that Hobbes looked to as did Marx nullify assumptions: he denied that lords force could be of a celestial sort, and presented the possibility that it really originated from the individuals despite the fact that his origination of portrayal was, as weve seen, totally different of our cutting edge understanding of it (which infers a two-way, intelligent relationship), he was the person who presented this idea, obviously a pivotal one in current legislative issues.

In Jane Austen s Pride and Prejudice, letters are used to indicate a change in direction of the plot or to form narrative crisis points. Jane Austen successfully weaves her letters into the natural narrative of the dialogue and description. Perhaps he is intimidated more by his feelings towards her because he has never been so infatuated with a woman before. Nonetheless, his letter makes Elizabeth realize the prejudice that lies in herself, as well as her love for Darcy. The persuasion written by Elisabeth Lenckos address the fact that the narrative form of Pride and Prejudice supports the depiction of the development into maturity of both Elizabeth Bennet and Darcy as a result of their encounter. Although the novel is told predominantly from Elizabeth’s point of view, the technique Austen employs allows the twin images of two intelligent, interesting partners to emerge who, the reader knows, are well matched because they are depicted as individuals with different, yet related complexities of thought and feeling. It adds to our fascination that we see Darcy mostly through Elizabeth Bennet’s less than perfect lens so that we share her initial dislike and perplexity as well as her eventual enlightenment.(Lenckos) Through this letter we are able to distinguish Elizabeth’s character, she is a

The four men were Leland Stanford who was the President, Collis P. Huntington who was the Vice President, Mark Hopkins who was the Treasurer, and Charles Crocker who was the Construction Supervisor. Leland Stanford was born in the year of 1824 in Watervliet, New York, and was raised on family farms. Stanford began law school around the year 1848. Stanford got married in 1850 and had one son. Stanford moved to California during the Gold Rush after loosing the law library his father got for him. He helped in organizing the Sacramento Library Association, which later became the Sacramento Public Library. Stanford was one of the four Sacramento, California businessmen known as â€Å"The Big Four†. They were all the investors of the Central Pacific Railroad that was incorporated on June 28, 1861. Stanford and his men got control of the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1868. He was also president of the Southern Pacific Company from 1885 to 1890. Stanford was elected chairman of the Southern Pacific Railroad’s executive committee in 1890. Stanford oversaw a corporation which imported thousands of Chinese laborers in the construction of the railroad. He cut the state’s debt in half and advocated for the conservation of forests. Stanford served as Chairman of the U. S. Senate Committee on public buildings and grounds in the United States Senate. He wrote many senate bills. Leland Stanford died of heart failure at his home in Palo Alto, California on June 21, 1893. He is buried in the Stanford family mausoleum on the Stanford campus. Collis Potter Huntington was also on of the â€Å"Big Four† men of the western railroading. He was born in the year 1821. Huntington was part of building the Central Pacific Railroad which was part of the first U. S. transcontinental railroad. He also helped in leading other major interstate lines known as the Southern Pacific Railroad and the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. The new railroad facilities by the river resulted in expansion of the town of Guyandotte, West Virginia. Huntington was also known for the CO’s Peninsula Extension. This resulted in opening a pathway for West Virginia bituminous coal. When he died, his nephews continued his work at Newport News. Most of the railroad and industrial development are very important activities in the 21st century. The Southern Pacific is now part of the Union Pacific Railroad and the CO became part of CSX Transportation. He pursued the idea of creating a rail line that would connect the America’s East and West with the three other men. In 1869, the tracks of the Central Pacific Railroad joined with the tracks of the Union Pacific Railroad and America then had a transcontinental railroad. Huntington had a friend introduce a bill in order to excuse the company from repaying money for the railroads. The Southern Pacific grew to more than 9,000 miles of track. Huntington prevented the port of San Pedro from becoming the main port of Los Angeles using the Southern Pacific Railroad. Mark Hopkins was also one of the investors involved in the Central Pacific Railroad. Hopkins was born in Henderson, Jefferson County, New York. Hopkins formed the â€Å"New England Mining and Trading Company† when the California Gold Rush began. Hopkins opened a store in Placerville, California but it did not succeed. He then opened a grocery store in Sacramento in 1850 with his friend Edward H. Miller who became secretary for the Central Pacific Railroad. In 1861, Hopkins and the rest of the Big Four men founded the Central Pacific Railroad. He was well known for his thriftiness. He was the companies treasurer. Hopkins had health problems soon after and died on a company train in Arizona. Charles Crocker was the other man that was part of the Central Pacific Railroad. Crocker was born in Troy, New York. In the year 1845, Crocker invested his money in the railroad business by opening up an independent iron forge. In 1861, he became one of the four investors in the railroad. He was the construction supervisor and president of Charles Crocker and CO. Crocker bought train plows to plow the tracks. This didn’t work because of the frequent ice on the tracks. He later built over forty miles of snow sheds to cover the tracks in Sierra Nevada Mountains. Crocker and his men got control of the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1868. Crocker was also in charge of Wells Fargo and was the president. He also took control of the Woolworth National Bank and gave it to his son. In the year 1886, Crocker got injured in a carriage accident and didn’t recover. He died two years later.

Predictable Crises of Adulthood free essay sample

No one wants to stray too far from home too fast, or become and individual overnight. We want to be able to crawl back to our parents when the tough gets going. Pulling up the roots in Gail Sheehy’s Predictable Crisis of Adulthood refers to the stage after adolescence when you should be â€Å"pulling up your roots†. Your roots in this aspect, is referring to your home. We try to separate our own views of the world from our families. In the process of separating our views from our parents we normally are attracted to fads that are unfamiliar and questionable by our parents. I know piercings is definitely one of the fads my parents will never understand and it’s something I absolutely love. Along with piercings, tattoos are another example of a fad that parents are normally not familiar with. Even though some parents might have one or two from back in the day, the new thing is starting to be full sleeves on kids arms. We will write a custom essay sample on Predictable Crises of Adulthood or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page During this stage we try to find ourselves and start to associate with an anticipated occupation, a sex role, a peer group and a world view. You begin to pull your roots emotionally after you have pulled them physically, by moving out. This is an important crisis in the passage of becoming an adult because if you don’t experience this crisis in the time frame of eighteen to twenty you will later on in life, and the repercussions for having it later could be more severe. The trying twenties imply that we are trying to be an adult and trying new things. During this stage we definitely try to take hold of our lives in an adult aspect. We tend to do the things we should. Our shoulds are modeled by everything: family values, pressing culture, the prejudice of our peers. During this period we try to build some stability for ourselves and making important commitments. During this period we also explore and experiment. I relate to this stage specifically in Gail Sheehy’s Predictable Crisis of Adulthood because I, myself am in my trying twenties. One of my biggest fears is that the choices I’m making now are irrevocable. â€Å"One of the most terrifying aspects of the twenties is the inner conviction that the choices we make are irrevocable. It is largely a false fear. Change is quite possible, and some alteration of our original choices is probably inevitable. † (Sheehy’s 6). This quote put to me to ease it assures you that making a choice that’s irrevocable you do not have to continue the path that, that choice has set you on. Sheehy goes on to tell us more about the crisis of life. The next three crises I cannot relate to since I’m in the trying twenties. Catch-30 emphasizes major growth towards becoming a mature adult. In our thirties men and women feel as if they are restricted and have a need to go above and beyond. Couples mutuality and grow in separate directions. The Deadline Decade is the decade between thirty-five and forty-five years old. This is a fork in the road where you are coming up on your prime and your body is starting to go downhill. During this deadline you put your foot on the gas pedal as hard as you can to accelerate. You want to feel as if you’ve accomplished something in life. In then runs in to the Renewal Phase or Resignation phase. In the mid-forties

interracial children essays

interracial children essays Proposal: Would there be a benefit for interracial children having a multiracial box on any application as means of identifying interracial children. Despite growing numbers, public images of interracial people - who have been part of the American landscape since the first Africans reached America's shores. Confusion surrounding race stems from the illogic used to define it. Slavery laws and social practices set a precedent - which survives to this day. Traditionally, "White America" as a whole has disenfranchised a people who appears or by definition has physical characteristics that challenge their hue as "White", today, this challenge is more evident than ever as marriages of different races has climbed in the United States. According to the United States Census data, there are over one million interracial marriages. Marriages between white men and Asian women are highest, supporting almost 25 percent of all interracial covenants. It is estimated that one out of every four marriages is between blacks and whites. This research proposal will designate its focus and energy toward the offspring of interracial couples. Until recently, conventional wisdom typically classified an interracial child as being of the same race as the minority parent. It is this limited and compartmentalized approach that has warranted a push for reclassification of interracial children. A child of an interracial partnership should have the right to choose which race identifies them. This analysis will examine the need for affirming the uniqueness of the child and why a full racial heritage will conceal a more settled, secure child. Once a child has cultural security, this research will prove that interracial children will dissipate the belief of inferiority among the minority parent. The basis of this analysis will contrast the studies that interracial children are inferior, abn...

Disney - Case Study Example Brands define or break the industry because brands help to organize inventory and accounting records. Moreover, customers are intricate about brands because it defines their personality. A legal function that brands offers is that that brand name can be protected through registered trademarks. The risk of expanding this business is competition and losing this intricate value itself. If Disney expands their organizations, the cost of this experience will be less because it will be more widely available. This will diminish not only the experience itself but the local businesses that reap the incentives from Disney. This also makes Disney lose leverage on the exclusivity because other vendors are less likely to pour their investments to Disney itself. Brand loyalty provides security and forecasting of the demand for Disney itself. More importantly, it creates barriers to entry that make it difficult for other firms to enter the market. Nuclear waste management assignment Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Nuclear waste management assignment - Essay Example Radioactive waste is dumped in the facility and kept there forever based on the assumption that radiation form this waste is containable for enormously large periods of times based on the engineering and structure of the repository and the types of rocks surrounding the facility. It is assumed that while the waste is kept in the repository, level of radiation it emits will decrease with time. Since rock formations around the repository are being depended upon to keep the radiation of the radioactive waste within the facility, location for the repository needs to be such that is surrounded by roc formations that can effectively add another barrier to the radiation’s escape. The repository will be built in a way that the waste is engulfed in multi layers barrier. When the repository is being designed, it needs to be ensured that its structure is such that in case waste needs to be retrieved, that can be easily managed. For those who believe that it will be an overnight transition, they are quite wrong. The government plan concerning its Managing Radioactive Waste Safely (MRWS) program span over a period of decades ant the first repository is thought to be ready by 2040 though regulating bodies are pushing to bring his date forward to the year 2029. This large scope of timelines makes it very clear that this project is not an easy one to undertake. The repository will not be functional for a long time for it does not only have to serve the purpose of a waste disposal site but it has to be safe and environmentally proven to be established. Unfortunately, safety is never a 100% guarantee in anything related to the nuclear industry but checks and balances are being kept in place to minimize any potential risk these repositories might pose. After site selection and before building of a repository, a complete risk assessment of any potent harm the repository might bring will be done

Ethical Implications for Human Trafficking in the United States Essay Example for Free

Ethical Implications for Human Trafficking in the United States Essay Ethical Implications for Human Trafficking in the United States Human trafficking is a type of modern-day slavery in which millions of people, regardless of gender or age, around the world are forced into. Human trafficking is the trade of human beings for the purpose of forced labor, sexual exploitation or illegal profits and usually involves the use of violence, fraud, or coercion to recruit, hide, and transport people illegally (Act Now). According to the United Nations is both a definition of human trafficking is â€Å"The recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring or receipt of persons, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation. Exploitation shall include, at a minimum, the exploitation of the prostitution of others or other forms of sexual exploitation, forced labor or services, slavery or practices similar to slavery, servitude, or the removal of organs. † (UNICEF) The traffickers use different types of strategies to exploit the â€Å"slaves†. There are two types of slavery: those who are forced to work for money and those who are kidnapped and forced to work for food (â€Å"Human Trafficking†). Trafficking primary involves exploitation which comes in many forms such as forcing victims into prostitution, subjecting victims to slavery or involuntary servitude, compelling victims to commit sexual acts for the purpose of creating pornography and misleading victims into debt bondage (Do Something). Of the 27 million slaves around the world, 80% of trafficking involves sexual exploitation, and 19% involves labor exploitation (Do Something). Many of the people who are victims of human trafficking are people who voluntarily enter the business but under false pretenses. These people leave their homes in order to change their quality of life but many of the times they are lied to about the conditions of the work they are intended to do. Due to monetary problems or joblessness, people try to find better opportunities out of the country. Poverty is a huge contributor to human trafficking as well. Mostly in third world countries and sometimes in second world counties, family members will sell females and children for cash. Females can cost around US$100-2,500 depending on the country, the age of the female and if she has had a child or not (PBS). Then they must work off the debt they accumulate, which includes costs of food, shelter, and other expenses with interest which can take years to settle. Homeless children or children who come from broken families are more susceptible to the sex industry to survive economically. These innocent victims put their trust on â€Å"manager† or the â€Å"middle man† who promise them a higher paying job in a better area. Many women leave their homes in order to find better opportunities for a high paying job for their family but when they arrive to the new city, they are forced into an exploitative job. They way human traffickers secure the â€Å"slaves† is by making them dependant on them by taking their passport away, making them into drug addicts and with emotional and physical abuse. Although 110 countries have signed and approved the document, implanting the policies and law proves most difficult. The challenge lies in targeting all the criminals who target innocent and vulnerable people who organize the human trafficking ring. In March 2007, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crimes (UNODC) formally launched a Global Initiative to fight Human Trafficking meaning they will help draft laws and help implement policies against human trafficking. The biggest international milestone to date has been the adoption of the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress, and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women, and Children (Act Now). The reason why it is so difficult to eradicate human trafficking is due to economical reasons. In economic terms, by increasing the amount of product in the most cost effect manner, the cheaper the product which is favorable for all consumers. However, putting it in simpler worlds, to provide lower prices for consumers, human traffickers reduce the cost of production by providing cheap labor to the factories. In order to find a better opportunity for their life, many people are being trafficked voluntarily. This means that they sign an â€Å"indentured servitude† agreement in which they are smuggled from one country into another. Even though this is illegal and exploitative, it allows people to move to a place that might have more resources to sustain them, which could balance the burden of human population. Because human trafficking allows some companies to produce goods and services at a lower cost, the other companies that compete legally will have to innovate and improve their businesses to stay competitive. Meaning human trafficking encourages the development of more efficient and innovative technology by providing cheap labor. Human trafficking dehumanizes the victims and rewards the perpetrators. With 50% of all slaves are under the age of 18 years, two thirds of them suffer from physical abuse from their handlers and it affects them in the long run (Do Something). They are more likely to develop metal health problems, engage in substance abuse, engage in prostitution and either commit, or be a victim of violent crimes (Do Something). We may think that things like this could never occur where we live but Orlando is the perfect example of how human trafficking in everywhere. According to Giselle Fernandez of the Coalition Against Human Trafficking, Florida is the number two destination for human trafficking due to the theme parks. Many of the girls work at the hotels, become prostitutes or end up in pornography. In order to prevent such a heinous crime, females must be educated so they are less susceptible to false hopes. Increasing police pay in certain destination areas so they are less likely to be bribed by traffickers. Only with efforts from the government, private companies, and especially communities will we be able to eradicate human trafficking.

Interactive Cable Archives and Videoconferencing :: Technology Education Curriculum Essays

Interactive Cable Archives and Videoconferencing The integration of technology into curriculum and instructional practices in P-12 education has been gaining momentum in classroom reform across the nation (Mowre-Popiel, Pollard, & Pollard, 1994). Interactive and digital technologies are now recognized as tools by which educators can bring unique resources into the classroom (Schutte, 1998; Wise, 2002) and engage students in dynamic, self-constructed learning (Branzburg, 2001). The use of technology as a tool that supports instruction and learning is transforming the traditional way of teaching; both digital and geographically located resources now offer an enriched content that was not available to earlier generations (Branzburg, 2001). As a result, many authors and researchers believe that the use of technology within educational settings will serve to motivate students to learn more, both with and without teacher assistance, effectively promoting increased cognitive development (Gernstein, 2000; Wise, 2002). While there are many projects involving the utilization of interactive and digital technologies in classroom instruction (Buckle, 1995; Gernstein, 2000; Warner, 1999; Petersen, 1998), there is limited scientific evidence of its effectiveness in improving teaching and learning when compared to traditional instruction. In addition, there exists almost no literature that illustrates the impact of the combined effect of both digital and video resources. Purpose of the paper The purpose of this paper is to describe the developmental process used to create technology-infused curriculum and the methodology used to document the combined impact of the enriched curriculum and instruction on students’ affective and cognitive domains. In addition, preliminary findings of pilot studies, conducted during the summer and fall of 2003 will be presented. The curriculum unit under study consisted of a civics education unit on the â€Å"Power of the Presidency† prepared for use in grades 7-12 (AP). Technological resources included interactive cable archives and point-to-point videoconferencing. Review of Literature The late 1980’s ushered in a period of change in the American educational context, with a major focus on integrating technology in P-12 classrooms (Dwyer, Ringstaff, & Sandholtz, 1990). Several authors credit this continued use to the belief that technology integration supports philosophies of instruction that perceive each student as a unique learner, thereby aiding in the transformation of teacher-centered classrooms into student-centered settings (Mowre-Popiel, Pollard, & Pollard, 1994; Bork, 1997). Research has provided at least partial support for this belief. Multiple studies have shown that instructional technology enhances learning (e.g. Clouse, 1991-1992; Phillips & Soule, 1992). An early study of technology-supported instruction, conducted by the Educational Testing Service, found that students learned more quickly in a web-based environment, compared to traditional classroom settings (Ragosta, 1982).

Cushing’s Syndrome

Cushing’s Syndrome is a hormone disorder caused by the body tissues being exposed to high levels of the hormone cortisol for a long period of time. The disease is commonly caused by taking corticosteroid medicine in high doses over an extended period of time. The condition can also be caused by the body’s excess production of cortisol due to an overactive adrenal gland. It is a rare disease that mostly affects adults between the ages of 20 to 50. Females are more likely to get the disease than males due to an adrenal or pituitary tumor. Cushing’s Syndrome signs and symptoms include progressive obesity and skin changes. There is rapid gain in the upper body fat deposit along the collar bone and the back of the neck which is often called â€Å"buffalo humps† and a rounded face which is referred to as â€Å"moon face†. The skin stretches causing pink or purple stretch marks along the stomach, thighs, breasts, and arms. A woman with the syndrome could experience excess body hair growth on their face, neck, chest, stomach, and thighs. It could cause their menstrual cycle to become irregular or stop. A man with the syndrome could experience decreased fertility and erectile dysfunction. Other signs and symptoms include excess sweating, fatigue, muscle weakness, headaches, high blood pressure, thinning and fragility of the skin causing it to bruise easily and heal poorly. Other symptoms also include dryness of the skin, acne, weakened bones, cognitive difficulties, and high blood sugar which may lead to diabetes. Cushing’s Syndrome can also cause loss of emotional control which could lead to depression, anxiety, and irritability. The adrenal gland of the endocrine system produces a number of hormones, including cortisol. Cortisol plays a number of roles throughout the body. It helps with regulating the body’s blood pressure, which keeps the cardiovascular system functioning normal. It helps to react to stress by converting proteins, carbohydrates, and fats into usable energy. The condition can be caused by medication such as prednisone that has the same effects as the cortisol that is produced in the body. A doctor may prescribe this type medicine to patients with inflammatory disease such as asthma, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, or to prevent the body from rejecting a transplanted organ. The treatment of these conditions often requires higher amounts of cortisol than the body normally needs in a day. The condition can be caused by your own body producing excess cortisol. This could occur from the excess production of one or both of the adrenal glands of the adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) which regulates production of cortisol. A benign tumor of the pituitary gland can cause secretion of an excess amount of ACTH, which will, in return, stimulate the adrenal gland to make more cortisol than the body needs. As mentioned previously, the condition occurs more often in women. Urine and blood lab tests are performed to measure the hormone levels in the urine and blood. These tests will show if the body is producing an excessive amount of cortisol. Saliva tests are also used by analyzing cortisol levels in salvia collected at night. Normally, cortisol levels rise and fall throughout the day, but levels in people without Cushing’s Syndrome will drop considerably in the evening. Imaging tests such as CT or MRI scans can detect abnormalities such as tumors in the pituitary and/or adrenal glands. All of these tests can help a doctor diagnose Cushing’s Syndrome and rule out other medical conditions. The treatment for Cushing’s Syndrome depends on what caused the cortisol to be high in the body. The treatment should be designed to lower the high level of cortisol in the body. If the disease was caused by long term exposure to corticosteroids, then the treatment would be reducing the use of corticosteroid. For patients with asthma, arthritis, or other conditions that require medication to manage their illness, doctors can prescribe noncorticosteroid drugs. Surgery is recommended if the disease is caused by a tumor that is present in the pituitary gland, adrenal glands, lungs, or pancreas. If surgery does not remove the tumor completely, radiation therapy is used in conjunction with the operation. Medications such as Nizoral, Lysodren, and Metopirone are prescribed to control production of cortisol when the surgery or radiation therapy doesn’t work. The length of recovery depends on the severity and cause of the Cushing’s Syndrome. Patients should be advised to increase their daily activities slowly due to weakened muscles. They need to be sure that they are eating sensibly and getting enough calcium and Vitamin D to help strengthen their bones. They need to monitor their mental health because depression can develop due to being overwhelmed or having difficulty coping with recovery. For aches and pains; the patient can take hot baths and do low impact exercises such as water aerobics. For patient recovery from cognitive difficulties, they can do crossword puzzles or math problems to exercise their brain and help to improve their brain function.

Friendship in Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett Essay

Friendship is best served when it is shared by individuals who have defined themselves. Throughout â€Å"Waiting for Godot,† this notion is explored by demonstrating the problems friends experience when they define one another, look to each other for self-definition, have unfair expectations of one another, become self-centered, and maintain friendship out of need, a need to be needed, or habit. Through this exploration, the reader finds that the possibility of ending up in a stagnant relationship as a result of these problems can be simply reconciled. Friendship is best enjoyed between friends who have defined themselves and enter into the given relationship as an outlet for mutual understanding and support, thus stifling the human tendency†¦show more content†¦Unfortunately, sometimes when others have made the effort to define themselves to us, we do not care to listen because we have already defined them in our minds. This error is made by Pozzo in Act 1: â€Å"What is your name?† he asks Estragon, to which Estragon replies, â€Å"Adam† (25). Pozzo does not listen, and instead spouts off a monologue about the sky. Such a mistake prevents their understanding of one another. When one person defines another and ignores the other’s own feelings, a gap in understanding results, which prevents much more than a surface connection between people to be made. Other times, people seek self-definition from others, only to hear what one wants. Such a scenario is played out in Act 1: Pozzo: â€Å"How do you find me? Good? Fair? Middling? Poor? Positively bad?† Vladmir: â€Å"Oh very good, very very good.† Pozzo (to Estragon): â€Å"And you, sir?† Estragon: â€Å"Oh tray bong, tray tray tray bong.† Pozzo: â€Å"Bless you, gentlemen, bless you! I have such need of encouragement...†(26). While Pozzo acquires the encouragement he needs from Vladmir’s statement, he asks directly for Estragon’s opinion--and perceives his incoherent reply to be a compliment. This miscommunication demonstrates both self-centeredness and a disregard for the true opinions of others; as long as Pozzo can convince himself that though others think well ofShow MoreRelatedWaiting for Godot and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead: The Theatre of the Absurd803 Words   |  4 Pagesplays Waiting for Godot written by Samuel Beckett and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead written by Tom Stoppard both incorporate human needs and concerns within their context through its whimsical and comedic dialogues.
